There is a great significance of the Holi festival in Hinduism.  There is various folklore associated with the festival but the most important of them is legend associated with Prahlad and Hiranyakshyap. The former is the son and the latter is the father the king of the demons and considered himself as God. Prahlad believed that Lord Vishnu is the almighty God. Because of the reason for his extreme devotion towards Lord Vishnu Hiranyakshyap wanted to kill his son. So he asked his sister Holika, who has a magical robe to entre fire unscathed and come out of the fire without any difficulty. Therefore, he asked Holika and his son to sit on burning fire with Prahlad in her lap. But because of the Prahlad devotion, Holika was burnt and he was saved by Lord Vishnu. Hence the Holi signifies the victory of good over evil and since then there is the tradition of burning Holika or Holika Dahan comes from the legend.
